Laying Our Flooring

We used self-tapping sheet metal screws to attach the subfloor to the metal van floor in a few places. We wanted to make sure the "foundation" of our van's floor didn't move at all, but we didn't go crazy with the sheet metal screws because we didn't want to create lots of extra holes in the van where rust could form. The first step in our approach was to lay down the subfloor with a sturdy piece of high quality 3/4" plywood. This piece had to be very stable and strong, as it supports about half the weight of our refrigerator and allows us to step on it repeatedly when entering the van.

Installing Laminate Flooring In Our Conversion Van

We ultimately decided to use laminate flooring because it looks better than vinyl, is easy to install, and is thinner than hardwood. What we used to install our Reflectix flooring for insulation

Step 1: Insulate the metal van floor

A metal van floor doesn't provide much of a temperature barrier between you and the outside, so you'll want to lay down some sort of insulation. Many vans use 3/4" thick plywood for their subfloors, but it doesn't need to be that thick and it takes up too much height. Step 4: Use templates to cut flooring for uneven spaces

We used the same templates found in the Reflectix and subfloor installations to cut and lay out pieces of laminate flooring for the irregularly shaped areas on the back and sides of the van.
