Michigan State, Duke To Slap The Floor, Focus On Defense In Sweet 16 Game

EAST LANSING --

Duke likely won't be the only team hitting the ground running when defending in Friday's Sweet 16 game against Michigan State. The Spartans have done it all year, with a ground slap in the Memphis game that drew wild cheers from the partisan crowd at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Facing the Blue Devils, the Spartans will have a defensive challenge themselves against a team that already ranks ninth in the nation in offensive scoring with 77.8 points per game. "Hitting the ground is just a sign of great defense and running emotions," Michigan State center Derrick Nix said. Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said, "If you look at what's going to win for them, what won for them the other night, they checked their cue against Creighton." The 6-foot-9, 270-pound Nix said that, like Michigan State, Duke has a good indoor-outdoor game as he will face fellow 6-foot-10, 235-pound senior Mason Plumlee. The last time Michigan State played Duke last season, Nix came off the bench and was 1-for-7 from the field, scoring two and fouling in 12 minutes in a 74-69 loss at Madison Square Garden. "We have to come play early," Nix said. "We have to go out with fire because last year they came out and went on the gas and took us out early, so we just have to go out and play and match their intensity.
