Ebay Bans Jeffrey Dahmer Costumes After Listings Surge Due To Netflix‘S ’Monster’: You Can‘T Sell Items That ’Promote Or Glorify Violence’
A flurry of Dahmer-related costume listings hit the website in the wake of Ryan Murphy's hit Netflix series, "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," starring Evan Peters as the serial killer. As reported by Buzzfeed: "A spokesperson confirmed that the marketplace is actively removing these ads and that they are 'prohibited', although some ads are still active at the time of publication... The company says sellers are prohibited from posting items that "promote or glorify violence" or are associated with violent individuals, acts for which they have gained notoriety, or crime scenes from the past 100 years.Variety has contacted eBay representatives for further comment. Interest in Dahmer has skyrocketed because of Netflix's "Monster," which now trails only "Stranger Things 4" as the streamer's most-watched English original series. Shirley Hughes, whose son was murdered by Dahmer in 1991, recently told TMZ that it's "wrong" that people now want to dress up as Dahmer because of the popularity of the Netflix series.

As first reported by Buzzfeed, eBay is removing listings for costumes inspired by notorious serial killer, pedophile, necrophiliac and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer. Despite committing his murders in the late '70s and early '90s, Netflix's true crime series DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has recently brought the killer back to the forefront of public consciousness. eBay's removal of Dahmer's costumes is in line with its Violence and Violent Criminals Policy, which prohibits users from selling "items closely associated with or that benefit violent criminals, their acts, or crime scenes at the over the past 100 years". An eBay spokesperson confirmed to Mashable that Jeffrey Dahmer costumes have been banned under this policy for some time, as have costumes of other real life serial killers, terrorists and criminals. Although Dahmer is by far the most popular serial killer right now, he is by no means the only criminal the media and public are obsessed with. Regardless of your access to serial killer outfits or how fond of Evan Peters you are, dressing as Dahmer or indeed any real serial killer raises significant ethical issues.
